Hi xen4179,

Welcome! The most common language games are programmed in is C++. I don't know what language we are using on NecroDancer (I am not an engineer), but C++ is the industry standard

Necrodancer is coded using http://www.monkey-x.com/ however if you are looking to making games for the first time you can search for tutorials on specific languages (like c++ or Monkey or Unity whatever). As someone who is just doing coding as a hobby atm (Gonna change very soon) I found that http://unity3d.com/ was fairly easy to use and has a bunch of tutorials actually supplied by unity itself.

I am a hobby game developer as well and I would like to recommend http://www.love2D.org/ because I feel like it is well-suited to beginners and skilled programmers alike. löve2D is a very user-friendly library which lets you program in Lua (I love this language, pun intended) and compiles your code to C++, so it's still cross-platform! It bears the distinction of having instant gratification and easy set-up, yet also providing excellent tools for making well-optimized 2D games from scratch. It might also be a good way to learn object-oriented programming.

If you know what you're doing it is also capable of incorporating C++ libraries for added functionality.

I've been dabbling in LÖVE2D recently, it's a pretty fun exercise for novice developers!
